Panathinaikos was superior to Olympiakos, had opportunities to emerge victorious from OAKA, but drew 0-0 in the derby of the seventh round of the Stoiximan Super League.
The Olympic Stadium was filled with more than 50,000 Green fans and Diego Alonso’s Panathinaikos gave everything to get the three points. They played for victory from the first to the last second, but could not get the ball into the net.
However, the tradition of Panathinaikos being unbeaten at home games in the last three years against their “eternal” rivals continued for the eighth consecutive match…
The Shamrock players entered the derby strongly, taking control from the first second and creating the first dangerous moment in the 11th minute with a header from Jedvaj after a corner from Tete at the far post. The threat was even greater in the 16th minute, when Djuricic caught a stunning diagonal volley just outside the penalty area. But the ball went… just over the crossbar.
The Greens also scored in the 21st minute with a header from Ingasson after a free kick from Bakasetas. However, the ball went just wide again. Panathinaikos’ pressure continued and in the 30th minute, Mladenovic threatened again with a shot from outside the area in a quick counterattack.
Olympiacos came close to scoring in the 35th minute – against the run of play – as after Lodigin’s clearance, Martins received the ball and passed it to El Kaabi. The Moroccan crossed in a diagonal pass, but Ingasson moved quickly to clear before the ball crossed the line.
The Greens were not affected by this play and continued to methodically pursue the goal. They came close in the 37th minute, when Tete slipped, passed Ortega giving the ball to Ioannidis, who shot. Retsos saved the goal with projection.
In the 44th minute, Ioannidis left the field with an injury to his right hamstring and was replaced by Sporar, who in the 45+1 minute was beaten twice by Tzolakis after a constant threat in the Olympiakos area. But at this point, even though Retsos “caught” the ball inside the box with both hands, neither the referee nor the VAR saw the obvious penalty!!!
Olympiacos tried to threaten with a header from El Kaabi in the 56th minute, Lodigin was on hand to block the ball. The Red-Whites came close to the goal in the 71st minute, but Lodgin initially blocked Mouzakitis’ shot, while then Ingasson and Jedvaj, with surprising efforts, prevented El Kaabi and Kostoulas from scoring.
With the introductions of Maksimović and Pelistri (65′) and Ounahi and Kotsiras (75′), Alonso renewed his line-up in a desire to refresh itself. And Panathinaikos had a key moment in the 78th minute. Ounahi pressed high, stole the ball, carried the ball and after dodging his opponent, he fired a diagonal shot that ended up grazing Tzolakis’ right post.
In the 90+1′, Masouras went face to face towards Lodigin, but Panathinaikos’ goalkeeper saved and kept his goalposts intact.
