The family of Panathinaikos mourns today the loss of the greatest of the best, Mimis Domazos. It is a day of mourning for the club. The emblematic General of Panathinaikos has passed on to eternity. He will remain immortal in the memory of all of us and his achievements will remind future generations that Mimis Domazos was the one and only.

The General was, is and will be the greatest footballer who made Greek football famous. He was the first of the first. He was the great captain and leader of the Shamrock for the 20 years during which he honored the club’s jersey and was adored by the fans like no other. He was the “good ten”! He was the one everyone had as a role model. He was the one everyone wanted to have as their captain. He was the one that no one wanted to have as opponent. He was the best ace of the fields this country has ever produced.

He was born on January 22, 1942 and started playing football in the fields of Ampelokipi near Alexandras Avenue. At the age of 13 he got his first card with the Amyna Ampelokipon. His talent was unparalleled and Panathinaikos was his destiny. His unofficial debut with the Greens as a right winger took place in a friendly match against AEK for the Christmas Cup, which was held on December 26, 1958. The coach of the Greens at that time, Svetislav Glisovic, suggested in 1959 the acquisition of the super-talented young ace and Mimis Domazos was transferred to Panathinaikos at the age of just 17. The day he officially wore the Green jersey, the course of Greek football history essentially changed. During his time, Panathinaikos was dominant: it won nine championships (1960, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1977), three Cups (1967, 1969, 1977), and one Balkan Cup (1977).

The club became famous all over the world and Domazos was its brightest star. The highlight of Domazos’ “golden” era was Panathinaikos’ epic run to the final of the European Cup in 1971. At the legendary Wembley, he was the first to enter the field as the captain of the only Greek team to have ever played in a final of the top European club competition. Later, he led the Greens to the historic double final of the Intercontinental Cup against Nacional Montevideo. The “general” proudly in front with the number ten on his back and with the armband on his arm showing the way and inspiring his teammates. As he always did in all stadiums…

He played continuously for Panathinaikos from the summer of 1959 till 1978. He returned in December 1979 to close his enormous career with the team of his heart. He wore the green jersey for 20 seasons, making 504 appearances with the Shamrock on his chest. He is the top player in participation in the history of Panathinaikos and in Greek football overall (538 matches, 141 goals). He played 39 times in European Cups, while in total he exceeded 600 games wearing the Shamrock on his chest!

He was a great virtuoso of the ball but also a great performer, as demonstrated by the 165 goals he scored with Panathinaikos: 136 in the championship, 26 in the Cup and 3 in Europe was his impressive record in this field as well.

A born winner, Mimis Domazos did not want to lose even in the friendly matches of Panathinaikos’ veterans. With his own goal in 2000, the Greens prevailed 1-0 over the Ajax veterans, getting revenge for the lost final of 1971.

Domazos remained with Panathinaikos during his entire life, serving at times as a member of the team’s management. He never missed a match of his beloved Panathinaikos. In cold and rainy weather, even in difficult competitive seasons for the club, the “general” was always present in the stands. Eternally passionate about football, eternally in love with Panathinaikos…

The unsurpassed Domazos, the “general of generals”, our beloved Mimis, is no longer with us. However, his star will shine forever and will be a guideline for the new generations at Panathinaikos.

We express our sincere condolences to his family.
