The team lost easily 2-0 from Ajax Amsterdam and was disqualified from the next stage of Europa League´s competitions.
Panathinaikos added one more negative result in its “losses”, getting to a third consecutive defeat in both European competitions and the championship, after losing in Amsterdam by Ajax 2-0, for the 5th match day of Europa League group stage.
Panathinaikos started the match in a defensive orientation, giving priority on breaking all offensive initiatives and attacks of the hosts. This target was initially achieved, although Ajax had the ball possession but was unable to threat or to create any chance before Panathinaikos’ goalposts. The “Greens”, from their side, were trying to forward the game by Coulibaly and Hult. In such an initiative, in the 27th minute, the right extreme back found Ibarbo in the back of the of the Dutch team’s defendants. The Colombian forward entered the box and shot but the ball was “stopped” by the left post and went out.
2 goals in ten minutes
The game continued in almost the same style. There were two opportunities, though, which determined the score in just 11 minutes. In the 39th minute, Schone opened the score by executing powerfully a foul, won by Younes, far from the box, sending the ball at the left corner of Steele’s goalposts. This way the hosting team prevailed in the score thanks to a “very lucky” goal, as till then they didn’t create any chance. The “tingling”, due to that, accompanied Panathinaikos during the second half and very quickly, in the 50th minute, Tete took advantage of an error by Hult, stole the ball and by a diagonal shoot, he did away from the box, sent the ball in the right corner of the English keeper’s goalposts, who was unable to stop that second goal.
Without counteraction
Panathinaikos didn’t show any ability to change either its image or – even more – the score of the match, during the 43 minutes that followed till the end of the duel. In the contrary, the Dutch team taking for granted the security a 2-0 score was offering, became much more productive and created some opportunities which was not able to transform into a goal. Ajax prevailed as a team till the end of the game letting Panathinaikos without a point, for one more game, impeding its way to the next stage of Europa League’s competitions.
