Panathinaikos wasn’t able to take advantage from the huge opportunities it had in OAKA’s derby and thus lost by 1-0 from the team of ΑΕΚ in a match held for the 12th match day of the Super League. The Greens were superior during most of the game, they have had great opportunities which couldn’t be transformed into goals and were victims of the idleness shown at the beginning of the match.
The Shamrock disadvantaged itself by losing that game and was defeated after three consecutive victories, being unable to ameliorate its classification. Once more during the season the Greens did not deserve such a defeat which they couldn’t avoid, as was the case in the duels against PAS Yiannina, Aris and Asteras Tripolis.
ΑΕΚ achieved to completely surprise its rival by scoring just in the 2nd minute. Livai Garcia took the ball passing it to Mantalos who sent it to Mohammadi who crossed toward the heart of Panathinaikos’ defense. Szymanski was unmarked and opened the score by a header. AEK tried to score again in the 8th minute but Brignioli reacted correctly in the long shoot of Garcia. Little by little Panathinaikos started to prevail in the pitch, passing the ball and controlling the game. Its first final effort was done in the 16th minute by a shoot from Palacios situated on the wing but missed scoring in the 28th minute.
AEK tried to double its goals in the 38th minute with Araujo, but Brignioli was in a good position and stopped the ball.
In the beginning of the second half AEK tried to shock the Greens but without any success as Araujo couldn’t overcome Brignioli’s strength and devotion. On the other hand Panathinaikos has a great double opportunity to score in the 47th minute with Palacios who shot and although the ball seemed to have passed the line both the linesman and the VAR did not allowed the goal. Panathinaikos continued its good rhythm as well as the pressing in order to score. In the 57th minute Palacios lost another great chance to score as his shoot passed slightly out, missing to pass the ball to unmarked Macheda, who was in the rival box. AEK scored a second goal in the 70th minute with Zuber but the referee correctly disallowed that goal as Araujo was in an off side position from the start of the play. In the last 20 minutes of the game the Greens tried to be more offensive and more aggressive pressing their rival with all their force. AEK played in very defensive way in order to keep the result and thus the Shamrock was defeated by 1-0.
