Panathinaikos was “frozen” in Leoforos and was defeated 1-0 from the team of Asteras Tripolis in a game held for the 20th match day of the Super League’s Interwetten championship. The Greens were below expectations leaving the period that the team seemed to be progressing after its victories against Anagenissi Karditsas and Ionikos. Although the Greens knew that they were going to confront a difficult rival, they couldn’t develop their quality in the pitch, having also to face a rather tolerant referee.
The Shamrock entered the game offensively having several shoots toward the rival goalposts by Palacios, Carlitos and Aitor that couldn’t be transformed into goals, the most important among them were shoots by Palacios in the 23rd minute and by Aitor in the 38th minute.
The second half started almost the same way with several efforts by both teams and the expulsion of Munafo who got a second yellow card after touching the ball with his hand. A penalty in the 84th minute whistled by referee Sidiropoulos after consulting the VAR, as Sanchez tried to stop the attack of Riera, has determined the game. Barales executed the penalty scoring for Asteras. Panathinaikos continued to strove and scored in the 90th minute with Aitor. The goal was disallowed by the VAR, thought, as the Spaniard was in an off side position. Few moments later the referee whistled the end of a game won by Asteras Tripolis. This was the first loss for Panathinaikos in its own ground for 2022.
